Esports is getting more popular on every continent. Professional gamers are becoming just as respected as any other sports player. For example, in South Korea esports players are the national starts. And gaming culture is very wide spread. This comes as no surprise as South Korea is the home to some of the world’s most advanced technology companies which Samsung is one of them.
Esports game titles have something called a prize pool. The prizes come straight out of it and it varies every year. But these are some of the biggest prize pools in the last few years. First, let’s take a look at the comparison for all games together:
The most popular games today for esports are League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Call of Duty, Heroes of the Storm, Overwatch and Dota 2. Collectively, their prize pools were $78 million for 2017, $73 milion for 2016, and $51 million for 2015. As you can see, from year to year, the prize pools keep getting larger and this value can only increase in the future.
It has became some kind of standard to have $1,000,000 prize budget for a major event. Also, in last year, many esports titles had a major event which included Halo 5, CS: GO, League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, rFactor 2, Dota 2 and Hearthstone.
Call of Duty
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (Console version of the game) had the biggest prize pool of $1.5 million USD. About 72 tournaments were held for this game. The total prize was over 4 million in 2017. The latest version of the game is always chosen by the Call Of Duty World League Finals. This year the viewership was record breaking even though the Call Of Duty fans were against the futuristic theme shooter that this version of the game is. The trailer for this infamous COD game has the most “dislikes” than any video in YouTube history, just because of the futuristic theme most fans don’t approve of or enjoy.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive had four tournaments in total with their prize pools set at $1,000,000.
However, the number of tournaments with all prize pools (including less than $1 million USD) is 893. This game has the largest viewership. More than 40,000,000 people were watching the most popular CS:GO tournament last year, with the peak of 1.8 million people watching at the same time during the final game.
Defence Of The Ancients 2 (Dota 2) is only available on the PC. There have been 158 tournaments online for this game and a total prize pool of over $38 million USD. The name of the most popular tournament is The Dota 2 International. Valve is the company who maintains the game so that is also where the prize fund is coming from. Over 90 million people watched the Dota 2 International 2017 with more than 10 million people watching at the same time. There are 43 players now who are millionaires by winning the tournaments in Dota 2 in the last three seasons.
Professional esports players practice very hard to achieve the best results. They play for hours every day and very often teamwork is the key. The whole team gets together and plays again and again until they become the very best.
